As the name suggests, Glen Innes was founded largely by Scots. The first settler, Archibald Boyd, was guided by "The Beardies", William Chandler and John Duval, who are commemorated in The Land of the Beardies Festival. The town takes its name from another Scottish pastoralist, Major Archibald Clunes Innes, and  was gazetted in 1852.

The town of Glen Innes is located at the junction of the Gwydir and New England Highways, four (4) hours from Brisbane and seven (7) hours from Sydney.
