COUNCIL LIFTS WATER RESTRICTIONS
Glen Innes Severn Council is lifting water restrictions for the town of Glen Innes, effective 24 February 2009.
Council's Director of Engineering Services, Vanessa Menzie, said that Council is lifting the water restrictions due to recent rainfall in the catchment area. "Over the past few days we have seen good inflows into the Beardy Weir, due to significant rainfall in the Beardy River upper catchment. This has resulted in the weir now overflowing," Mrs Menzie said.
Mrs Menzie said that Council's Drought Management Plan was activated on 29 January due to the water volume in the weir dipping below 97%. "Level 1 restrictions were introduced to alert the community to the dropping water level. Unfortunately, while evaporation rates for January and February were above average, rainfall was below average between early January and mid February. The ongoing effect of this was a continued drop in the water level that necessitated Council escalating from level 1 to level 2, and then level 3 restrictions".
Council thanks the public for its co-operation during the water restriction period. General Manager, Hein Basson, said that most locals were very understanding of the need to implement water restrictions. "Council is very aware of the need for water security. The Engineering Services Department is focused on investigating options for the long term water supply for Glen Innes," he said.
