NEW STAGE CURTAINS RESTORE GRANDEUR TO TOWN HALL
On Tuesday 2 September, new coloured velvet curtains from theatre equipment suppliers STE Pty Ltd were installed on the Town Hall stage, as part of an overall upgrade of the building.
General Manager, Hein Basson, said Council had to purchase the new stage curtains, because the old ones were rotting away. "Several community groups that used the Town Hall wrote to Council about replacing the old curtains," he said.
In 2006, Council resolved to investigate how much it would cost to replace the curtains, and to consider allocating money in the 2007/08 budget for this project. "During the past two (2) years, Council has researched the issue of stage curtains carefully," Mr Basson said. "We are confident that we have bought the product that will give us best value for money. We have chosen gold coloured curtains to match the wooden panelling and the gold ormolu that decorates the stage."
Mr Basson said the curtains should last for at least 12 to 15 years. "They have also been treated with a flame retardant, so that they don't pose an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) risk," he explained.
The new velvet stage curtains will make the Town Hall more attractive, and Council is hoping that the amount of groups that use the hall will increase as a result. "The Town Hall is a beautiful venue," Mr Basson said. "We have had many people comment on the elegance of its architecture. Now that we have the new curtains for the stage, it will be even more appealing, particularly for performers. We hope that the number of performances, functions and displays in the Town Hall will grow."
