Privet Declared a Noxious Weed

Last modified: November 16, 2009 - 11:32 PM

Privet has been declared a Class 4 Noxious Weed in the Glen Innes Severn Local Government Area (LGA) from 1 April 2009 to 1 April 2014. A declared Class 4 Noxious Weed means that the plant poses a threat to primary production, the environment and human health, and is widely distributed in an area and is likely to spread within the area or to another area.

This means land holders are legally obliged to prevent Privet from flowering through pruning or hedging, or to remove it through mechanical, manual or chemical means. Since Privet has been allowed to grow within the Glen Innes Severn Area for a long time, Council has declared an Amnesty until 1 April 2010. This will allow people with large Privet infestations to adopt an appropriate control program. However, Council requests that during the Amnesty people with large Privet infestations begin control programs, to prevent further seeding and to reduce spread into neighbouring land.
